Apple reportedly struck a deal to offer the iPhone on China Mobile

According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, Apple has struck a deal with China Mobile to officially sell the iPhone on the carrier. The deal is said to have the Apple iPhone devices available on the carrier’s shelves later this month – around December 18.

The agreement between Apple and China Mobile will open for the Cupertino giant the doors to the largest wireless carrier in the world. China Mobile has over 700 million subscribers.

The Apple iPhone 5s and 5c both feature support for China Mobile’s TD-LTE network. The devices have already received regulatory approval.

A inédita decisão de lançar simultaneamente duas versões do iPhone tem trazido bons resultados para a Apple. Pesquisa da Kantar divulgada hoje informa que metade dos compradores do modelo 5c (com acabamento em plástico) nos EUA são ex-usuários de outras marcas, especialmente Samsung e LG, acostumados com o Android. Diferentemente do top de linha 5s, comprado em sua maioria para substituir antigas edições do telefone.



Os dados apresentados pelo estudo sugerem que a Apple tem potencial para atrair consumidores de outras marcas e sistemas operacionais utilizando o iPhone 5c como chamariz. Embora não seja tão barato quanto se esperava antes do lançamento, nos Estados Unidos o dispositivo é encontrado por cerca de US$ 100 nos planos atrelados a operadoras. No Brasil, desbloqueado, custa a partir de R$ 2.000.



Estratégia



Conforme já dissemos por aqui, o objetivo da Apple é maximizar os lucros com modelos antigos. É fácil entender: a maçã sempre teve "iPhones mais baratos", que eram as versões anteriores ao lançamento mais recente, que sempre viam um corte de preço assim que um aparelho novo é lançado. Agora isso deixa de existir porque a Apple encerrou a comercialização do iPhone 5 para dar lugar ao iPhone 5c, que, basicamente, é o mesmo aparelho com um acabamento diferente.



Desta forma, ambos os dispositivos se equivalem em especificações e preço final para o usuário. O que não é igual são os custos de produção que a Apple terá. Na média, explica o professor João Carlos Lopes Fernandes, professor de Engenharia de Computação do Instituto Mauá de Tecnologia, a substituição do metal pelo policarbonato, conhecido popularmente como plástico, diminui os custos a taxas entre 15% e 30%.

iPhone 5S Photos leaked along with a new Home Button

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: Apple plans to unveil two new iPhone models on Tuesday and one of them, reportedly dubbed iPhone 5S, will likely feature a fingerprint scanner. A pair of recent leaks seemingly revealed the new flagship iPhone 5S’s packaging, on which is printed an image of the handset with a redesigned home button. The new icon-less button has seemingly been wrapped with a silver ring, and now a new leak shows the redesigned home button in white for the first time ever.

French blog Nowwherelse.fr on Tuesday morning published a photo of what it claims to be the quick start guide found within the retail packaging for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 5S. The image seemingly shows a white and silver iPhone 5S with all of the moving parts labeled, and the text pointing to the new home button reads “Home button / Touch ID sensor.”

Several earlier reports suggested that Apple’s new fingerprint scanner would be embedded in the iPhone 5S’s home button and might be used primarily to unlock the handset securely, so the name “Touch ID sensor” would be apropos in that scenario.

By all accounts, Apple is holding a press conference on Tuesday to unveil two new handsets.The first will the flagship iPhone 5S, which is said to feature two new color options — champagne gold and a new lighter gray — as well as an improved camera with a dual-LED flash, an upgraded processor and a fingerprint scanner. The phone is expected to debut alongside the lower-cost iPhone 5C, which will sport specs in line with Apple’s current iPhone 5, but in a new plastic case that will launch in five colors.
